Before you tear it out

Can a damaged fence be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. A few broken boards, a gate that drags, or one section that leans after a storm rarely means the whole fence has to come down. We repair wood fences around Elgin, Lugoff and Columbia by swapping boards that have split, resetting posts and rails that have shifted, and building a section back to match the run beside it. Gates are a big part of the work. A gate that sags or will not latch is usually a hinge, a post or a frame problem, and we fix the cause instead of shimming around it. Storm damage is common here too, from limbs on the fence line to panels pushed over by wind. If most of a fence is tired, we will say so and talk through replacing sections or the whole run. Text us a few photos and we will tell you which way it looks like it is going.

Repair or replace? What we look for

These are the general signs we go through when we look at a fence. Your photos tell us the rest.

Repair usually fits when

  • A few boards or pickets are cracked, split or missing
  • One post or one section leans while the rest stands straight
  • A gate sags, drags or will not latch
  • Storm damage is limited to one stretch of the fence
  • The rest of the lumber still feels solid

Replacing usually fits when

  • Boards are soft or rotting along much of the run
  • Posts are loose or rotted at the ground in many places
  • The fence has been patched again and again
  • Damage keeps moving from one section to the next
  • You want a different height or style anyway

Not sure which column you are in? Send photos and we will tell you plainly. If it is time for a new fence, see fence installation.

What we fix

Repairs we do on wood fences

The photos below show finished repairs: new sections and gates built into fences already in the yard.

  • Repaired shadow box wood fence section beside a gray sided house

    Broken boards and pickets

Split, cracked, warped or missing boards come out and new ones go in, so the run reads as one fence again.

  • Straightened wood fence section running along a brick house

    Leaning sections

Posts and rails that have shifted are reset or replaced so the fence line runs straight again.

  • New wood gate with black hardware hung in an existing fence

    Sagging and broken gates

A gate that drags, will not latch or has lost a hinge gets fixed at the cause, or rebuilt when it is too far gone.

  • Replaced wood fence section standing beside a house after repair

    Storm damage

Panels blown over, limbs through the boards, a stretch knocked flat. We tell you what can be saved and what cannot, then rebuild what has to go.

  • Replaced arched wood fence section between capped posts

    Replaced sections

When one stretch is too far gone, we cut it out and build a new section in its place, matched to the style and height of the fence beside it.

How a repair goes

Four steps, starting with a text

  1. Text us photos

Take a few shots of the damage, the gate and the boards around it. Tell us where the fence is.

  2. We look at it

We go through the photos and talk it over by phone. If it needs eyes on site, we walk the property with you.

  3. You get a quote

We send a quote for the repair. Estimates are free. If something has to be ordered, that is where it comes up.

  4. We fix it

The crew replaces the boards, resets the posts or hangs the gate, built to match what is already standing.

Repair questions

What people ask before we start

Can you repair just one section of my fence?

Yes. If the damage is limited to a stretch of boards, a rail or a post, we repair or replace only that section and leave the rest standing. We build the new section to match the style and height of the fence beside it. If we see rot or wear running along the whole fence, we tell you, so you are not paying to patch something that will keep failing.

Can you fix a gate that sags or will not latch?

Yes. A gate that drags or will not latch is usually a loose hinge, a shifted post or a frame that has pulled out of square. We find the cause and fix it. When a gate is too far gone, we build a new one. Wood gates in this area often carry black hardware, and we hang the new gate to suit the fence it sits in.

How do I get a repair quote?

Text us a few photos of the damage and tell us where the fence is. We look at them, talk it over with you by phone and send a quote. Estimates are free. If the photos do not show enough to price the job, we walk the property with you to see it in person.

Will new boards match the rest of my fence?

The style and height will match. The color will not at first, because new pressure treated pine is lighter than boards that have weathered. Once the new lumber has dried, staining or sealing the whole run brings the tones together. Ask us about timing when we quote the repair, since drying time depends on the weather and the lumber.

Do you repair fences outside Elgin?

Yes. We work in Elgin, Woodcreek, Columbia, West Columbia, Lexington, Seven Oaks, Saint Andrews, Sumter, Florence and Rock Hill in South Carolina, and in Monroe, North Carolina. Send photos and the town the fence is in, and we will tell you whether it is within reach.
