Which garden fence fits your beds and your yard?

A garden fence has two jobs. It keeps pets and critters out of the beds, and it keeps the yard looking like a yard. Around Elgin, Lugoff and Columbia we build two kinds. A wood frame and wire panel fence sets a wire panel inside wood posts and rails. It stays open to the eye, so the plants still show, and the wire does the work of turning animals away. Wood picket is the traditional look. It marks a bed or a front walk and reads as a fence from the street. Which one fits depends on what is getting into your beds, how much of the yard you want to wrap, and what the neighbors will see. A big dog and a small critter ask different things of a fence, so tell us what you are up against. We walk the property with you and mark the line before a post goes in.

Garden fence types

Sized to your garden

A fence around one bed is not the fence around a whole front yard. Here are three jobs we build for, and how each one runs.

  • Wood frame and wire panel fence with a capped corner post around a front yard lawn

    Front yard, wood and wire

Wood posts and rails with a wire panel in every bay. It wraps a whole front yard or a long bed along the drive and keeps the view open.

Good for wide yards with beds you want to protect.

  • Wood picket fence behind a flower bed with a garden statue beside a house

    Picket

Open wood pickets around a bed or along a walk. It marks the line, turns pets away from the plants, and looks like a fence, not a pen.

Good for a single bed or a short run by the house.

  • Wood picket fence turning a corner along a side yard next to a house

    Side yard

A picket run between the house and the property line. Narrow strips need square corners and a gate wide enough for the way you use them.

Good for tight spaces beside the house or the garage.

Gates and corners

Plan the gate and the corners first

A garden fence gets walked through all the time, so the opening matters as much as the panels. Tell us where you carry the mulch, push the mower or step out to water, and we set the gate there.

Corners are where wire panels and pickets either meet clean or look patched. We lay them out on the walk, with the stakes still in the ground.

  • Walk gates hung between wood posts
  • Wider openings for a mower or a cart
  • Square corners where panels meet

Garden fence questions

Questions we hear about garden fences

What is a wood frame and wire panel garden fence?

It is a wood fence with a wire panel set into each section between the posts and rails. The wood gives it shape and strength, and the wire keeps it open so you can see the plants. We build these around front yards and garden beds in Elgin, and we build wood picket for a more traditional look.

Will a garden fence keep pets and critters out of my beds?

It can, if it is built for what is getting in. A dog, a rabbit and a deer each ask different things of a fence, in height and in how the bottom edge sits at the ground. Tell us what you are dealing with on the walk, and we plan the wire and the frame around it. No fence is a guarantee.

Do you handle permits and HOA rules for a garden fence?

Customers tell us the crew handled county permits and built to HOA standards, and we can do the same for a garden fence. Rules on height and style differ by county and neighborhood, so send us your address and any HOA letter when you ask for a quote. We work from what your neighborhood allows.

Where do you build garden fences, and how does a quote work?

We work in Elgin, Woodcreek, Columbia, West Columbia, Lexington, Seven Oaks, Saint Andrews, Rock Hill, Sumter and Florence in South Carolina, and Monroe in North Carolina. Send a text, talk it over by phone, then receive a quote. Estimates are free, and we walk the property with you first.
